Skinny Bitches 2016 Edition: Sailor Mercury Lunch

With the reboot of Sailor Moon, there have been a few pop up cafes in Japan that serve character-inspired dishes (not including the long time Talisman cafe in the Kansai area).

But all of them are basically desserts, which is the opposite kind of inspiration I need these days. I made my own 350 calorie lunch idea inspired by my dearest Sailor Mercury to combat the stress eating that is taking over my days. Here it is…

Snow White Week

This week, I’m going to do a series of Snow White related things. Snow White is perhaps my favorite fairy tale of all time. My love for Snow White has nothing to do with the Disney film version, although I do find the creepy 1930’s dated-ness of that adaptation to be absolutely, completely marvelous.

It has just been SO HOT this week and the sun is SO STRONG here. You know, I live in California so I’m surrounded by this kind of drunken orangey look all the time…

Become Like the Wind…or, um, not

I am in Week 6 of the Couch to 5k Running Program for super beginners. Looking for some inspiration, I keep returning to Tenno Haruka’s beautiful poem on the album “Uranus, Neptune, Chibi-Moon Plus.”

Some awkwardly translated lyrics can be found here. This poem reminds me strongly of the flashback episode of Sailor Moon S when Haruka and Michiru first meet.  Titled, “The Bond of Destiny! The Distant Days of Uranus” (運命のきずな!ウラヌスの遠い日), the episode begins with Haruka as a track star. She runs and runs like the wind, for all the wrong reasons.

You Came From A World of Water

From: Sailor Moon S

Episode 97: “The Labyrinth of Water! Ami is Targeted” or「水のラピリンス! ねらわれた亜美」

Mizuno Ami is feeling unsure of herself, wondering if all she has is her ability to study. Shouldn’t a person have more beautiful dreams, she wonders. She decides to clear her head with a swim at the gym pool.

French Inspired Anime Heroines Don’t Get Fat: Utena and a Goal Update

If it cannot hatch from it’s shell, the chick will die without ever truly being born. We are the chick; the world is our egg. If we cannot break the world’s shell, we will die without ever truly being born. Smash the world’s shell, for the revolution of the world!

With this mantra repeated in every episode by the morally ambiguous Touga, the famous Shojo Kakumei Utena (Girl’s Revolution Utena) puts the message of growth, strength, and transformation at the very front of the show’s themes. (In)famous for its general weirdness and postmodern non sequiturs, the legendary show actually has a few consistent messages:

Romanticizing the past is to be trapped in the past. Push forward.

To grow is to be reborn.
